In February, Basil, a 5 year old highland came to me to be ridden on. He had previously been backed, and came to me to continue his education. Straight away he was introduced to the prospect of hacking in the lanes. Simple straight lines and plenty of things to experience. He started doing this with someone on the ground with me, incase there was any major silly moments, and then started to go out on his own. He took to this like a duck to water, and soon started responding positively to my leg and voice to move forward. Shortly after, he started going out in ridden and led company, which again, no problems! He was happy to ride out in front and behind.
After a couple of weeks hacking, fittening him up and establishing the basics on the roads, he then progressed to the school.
First time was a bit ropey. Wasn't sure what he was meant to be doing but soon grasped the concept after a few short sessions. After 5-6 weeks he was walking, trotting and cantering in the school and going over some poles quite happily.
I was really pleased with his progress, and continue to enjoy getting updates from his owner and how much she is enjoying him. I look forward to seeing him again in the future for some more schooling.
